Tour options
At the Tower of London you will find a wide range of activities that you and the family will enjoy. Here are some of the options.
Yeoman Warder Tour
Yeoman Warder is the official name for the men in funny hats and black and red suits who protect the Queen and who are commonly known as 'Beefeaters'. Amazingly, these warders actually still live on the premises of the Tower (some even live in the Tower walls!). Included in the standard ticket price is a guided tour around the popular attractions at the Tower of London. Tours take place every thirty minutes and start at the entrance to the Tower. The tour lasts about one hour.
Unfortunately the Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) tours are only available in English. Therefore, if you want to find out about the Tower in another language you will need to use the audio guides that are on offer (see below for more details).
Medieval Palace Family Trail
If you would like to add an element of interest to your trip to the Tower for the kids, you can consider taking the family trails. This is a print out that you can either request on your arrival at the Tower (follow signs for the Welcome Centre where they will give you the trails, along with free pencils and badges) or print out ahead of the visit (go to the Official Tower of London Website family activities page and print out the Medieval Palace Family Trail pdf). This trail will send you to different parts of the Tower to make discoveries and fill in the sheets.
The Crown Jewels Family Trail
This is like the Medieval Palace Family Trail (see above) but it is specifically for your trip to see the Crown Jewels at the Tower (for details of the Crown Jewels at the Tower see our General Guide to the Tower of London). As with the Medieval Palace tour you can pick up packs on arrival at the Tower or print off the sheets online prior to your visit.
There are arange of other family activities that take place at the Tower. These include costumed interactive re-enactments, family fun days and craft activities. These events change throughout the year, so it is worth checking the Official Tower of London Website family activities page prior to your trip to see if there will be any interesting activities taking place during your visit.
Audio Guides
Audio guides could prove helpful for you at the Tower if you cannot speak English. The majority of the interactive tours and shows that take place at the Tower are in English. Therefore, if you would like some guided information during your trip to the Tower you can pick up one of the audio guides. With an audio guide you can take your own tour around the Tower. There is a choice of five different tour optionsThe options include the Normans, the Medieval Palace, imprisonment and execution, the Crown Jewels and the Beefeater accounts.
Audio guide languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (Mandarin).
